The Fine China

I have a patient to thank for the title of this blog. I was seeing her at Christmas time and she brought me a card with a photo of her two lovely children on it explaining that they were the ones who had broken "the fine china". I laughed, but the description stuck with me.

Her analogy is a great description for what happens to a woman's downstairs area after having a baby. I have spent the last 8 years of my life working to help women repair "the fine china". I became a pelvic floor therapist in 2012 and I love my job. It is actually not a job, it is a passion. I find it very rewarding to be able to help people who are having issues with some of the most basic functions in life, such as urination, bowel movements and sexual intercourse. I've seen how difficulties in these areas can negatively affect a person's life and I like that I can help change that.

I am especially passionate about helping women after they have had a baby. Postpartum pelvic PT is my soapbox issue and I feel it should be offered to EVERY woman who has had a baby and this is the standard of care in some countries. You go home with a baby and a referral for pelvic PT. The US is not there yet when it comes to healthcare but it is my goal to work toward that standard for the women in my community. And I find this starts with educating the moms. If you know what to ask for to advocate for yourself, you are more likely to get it! So this is the purpose of this my blog. It is an opportunity for me to reach out and help others beyond the patients in my practice and I hope that the information you find here helps you. My hope is that I can share my knowledge and experience in an informative and fun way. Weekly I will be posting new information, my thoughts and observations about pelvic floor conditions and technology that can benefit those dealing with pelvic floor dysfunction.

Like I said, pelvic PT is my passion and I became even more passionate about it after the birth of my first child when I saw firsthand how moms can sometimes be left in the dust when the focus shifts to those sweet new babies. I'm here to make sure that moms don't get forgotten and that their physical needs are addressed so that they can be the best new versions of themselves possible as they start this journey into motherhood. That's why I call myself Mama Mender. I'm a mama, I'm a mender, I'm a Mama Mender. You can find me on Instagram and Twitter sharing more info and support for mamas.
